Applying Values Science in Policymaking: Insights from a Large Interdisciplinary Collaboration in the European Commission

Presenter: Mario Scharfbillig (European Commission)

Date: 19 Sept (Monday), 12:00-13:30 CET (online via Zoom)

Abstract: Values as a research object has gone through a renaissance in recent decades. The research spans many disciplines from social psychology, sociology, political science to philosophy. However, while much of the research is relevant on a larger scale, it is not always clear what a policymaker can learn from the evidence gathered for their daily work. In this talk, I will present some of the key findings from the report “values and identities – a policymaker’s guide”, where we synthesised values research across different disciplines and presented a number of “tools” for how policymaker may use these insights. The report focused on work of policymakers in the EU, but is applicable to policymaking everywhere. Future directions for an applied research agenda will be discussed as well.
