Speaker: Agner Fog (Technical University of Denmark)

Abstract: A meta-analysis of 70 cultural variables from 31 published cross-cultural studies shows two strong factors that are reproduced by different studies and different sets of cultural variables. Several authors have found new factors and given them new names without realizing that they were similar to previously published factors, but rotated differently.

The strongest common factor combines the effects of economic, social, political, and technological development as well as cultural effects of modernization and psychological effects of peace and security. The existence of this common factor was predicted by the so-called regality theory.

Regality theory is similar to the theory of tight and loose cultures, but with a stronger theoretical foundation in evolutionary psychology. It is connected with the psychological theory of authoritarianism and with evolutionary theories of collective action. Regality theory has a broad scope of applications including aspects of social psychology, culture, and politics. This theory is supported by studies of both ancient and modern societies.
